Lecture 3: Do Genes Matter in Aging and Health Care?
Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, from 9-10 p.m. on WCVE Richmond and WHTJ Charlottesville; repeats Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at 1 p.m.

The man who for 10 years helped lead the global effort to decode the human genome

Director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development since 2009, Guttmacher spent 10 years at the National Institutes of Health working at the National Human Genome Research Project. He served for seven years as deputy director and later as acting director. In those roles, he oversaw efforts to advance genome research, integrate that research into health care, and explore the ethical, legal and social implications of human genomics.

The History, Status and Future Concerning Childhood Diseases

A nationally recognized “champion for babies” in preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality

Since becoming president of the March of Dimes Foundation in 1990, Howse has doubled the foundation’s revenue and helped launch highly successful national campaigns promoting folic acid and prematurity prevention. The March of Dimes Foundation carries out its mission through research (including genetic research), community services, education and advocacy. The original work of 13 Nobel Laureates was supported by the March of Dimes research grants.

The woman who helps oversee more than a billion dollars in research on aging

Alzheimer’s, other neurodegenerative diseases, the biological reasons for longevity, frailty and function in later life, and the social, behavioral and demographic aspects of aging … Bernard has made geriatrics her life’s work. As deputy director of the National Institute on Aging and the NIA’s senior geriatrician, she is focused on taking research from the lab to the community, as well as helping to ensure a future pipeline of scientists who examine the questions relevant to the aging population.
