J. Abbott Byrd III, M.D.

J. Abbott Byrd III, M.D., joined the MCV Foundation board in July 2026. He is a retired orthopaedic surgeon who concluded his clinical career in 2021. He is a graduate of the VCU School of Medicine. For more than three decades, Dr. Byrd practiced with Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists and cared for patients at their offices in Chesapeake, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. His work reflects strong commitment to service, philanthropy and advancing the field of orthopaedic surgery.

Throughout his career, Dr. Byrd was consistently recognized as one of Coastal Virginia’s Top Doctors. In 2016, he received the Virginia Orthopaedic Society’s Career Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the field. The Byrd family's MCV legacy spans three generations. Dr. Byrd and his wife, Allison Byrd, M.D., both graduated from the VCU School of Medicine in 1978 and joined Dr. Byrd’s father, John Byrd Jr., M.D., a Class of 1947 gradudate; his mother, Louauna Byrd, a 1948 MCV School of Nursing graduate and children Jennifer Byrd, M.D., and William Byrd, M.D., both 2013 graduates of the School of Medicine.

In addition to his clinical and research contributions, Dr. Byrd has demonstrated a deep commitment to philanthropy. He and his wife endowed the Allison D. and J. Abbott Byrd III Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery at the VCU School of Medicine, ensuring ongoing support for future research and innovation.
