Board

Our volunteer Board of Trustees develops and directs the vision, policies and goals of the MCV Foundation.

By providing fiduciary oversight, managing the endowment and overseeing the disbursement of restricted and unrestricted funds, our board serves to advance the mission of the foundation and the medical center.

Board members are chosen for their exemplary leadership in the community and in business, for their professional expertise and for their devotion to our mission. Members serve a minimum of three years and may choose to renew their terms.

About the Chair

Ellen E. Spong

Board Chair

Ellen E. Spong joined the MCV Foundation board in 2002 and served three terms. In 2014, she rejoined the board.

Ellen is a managing director with Blue Edge Capital, LLC. For more than 30 years she has worked with nonprofit organizations, foundations and endowments to support their philanthropic goals through policy development and management of investment assets, including charitable trusts and other philanthropic instruments. She previously worked for Atlantic Union Bank as the director of institutional advisory services, for Wells Fargo as senior vice president of philanthropic services and for SunTrust Banks as managing director of the foundations and endowments specialty practice. She also served as director of planned giving for The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

She is a past chair of the Audit and Appropriations Committee of the MCV Foundation board and chaired the foundation's Strategic Planning Task Force. In the community, Ellen also serves as chair of the board of directors for The Richmond Forum and chair of the Finance and Investment Committee of the Westminster Canterbury Foundation. She is a past president of the Virginia Gift Planning Council Board of Directors, and past president of the Richmond Estate Planning Council.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in government and foreign affairs from the University of Virginia, is a member of the LEAD Virginia Class of 2013 and earned the designation of Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy from the American College of Financial Services in 2017.

John O. Beckner, R.Ph.

John is the senior director of strategic initiatives at the National Community Pharmacists Association where he helps independent community pharmacies develop diversified revenue streams and maximize patient care activities.

Mike Bisceglia

Mike is the president and co-founder of Stauer Watch and Jewelry Company and the president and founder of Metrix Media. 

Charles F. Bryan Jr., Ph.D.

Charles is founding partner with Daniel P. Jordan of Bryan & Jordan Consulting, LLC, which specializes in strategic planning, fundraising, board and staff relations and executive searches for nonprofit institutions and higher education.

Elizabeth Whalley Buono, RN, J.D.

Liz is chief legal officer and chief compliance officer at Phlow, an essential medicines impact company that is reimagining essential medicines from start to finish through the use of flow chemistry and other advanced development and manufacturing processes.

George W. Burke III, M.D.

George joined the VCU School of Medicine Pulmonary Division as an assistant professor in 1977, then in 1979 entered private practice with Pulmonary Associates of Richmond where he worked until his retirement in 2014.

Robert “Bob” C. Canfield

Bob is the retired director of branch development for Ferguson Enterprises, a diverse distributor with operations spanning multiple business groups.

Alex Cecil

Alex is managing director and chief compliance officer for BB&T Securities. He is an active member of the Securities Industry Financial Markets Association's General Counsel/CCO Leadership Group.

I. Lee Chapman IV, CFA, is president and chief executive officer at Davenport & Company LLC. 

Richard M. Clary, M.D.

Richard retired in 2012 after devoting three decades to medical practice in Richmond, both with Surgical Specialists of Richmond and then Richmond Surgical.

Sheila Corcoran

Sheila Corcoran's professional experience spans more than 20 years in finance and asset management. Most recently, she was a partner with Empyrean Capital Partners for 13 years.

Charles F. Crone

Charles retired as vice president of Williamsburg Pottery in 1990 after 30 years with the company. He and his wife Ginny have been involved with the MCV Campus since 1986.

Paul Croston

Paul is the managing partner of the Richmond and Roanoke offices of KPMG LLP, a global network of professional firms providing audit, tax and advisory services.

Oscarlyn Elder

Treasurer

Oscarlyn is Truist’s wealth investment platform executive. Her work involves the intersection of high and ultra-high net worth clients’ investment experiences, technology, and the experiences of client-facing investment professionals.

George P. Emerson Jr.

George founded Emerson Companies LLC, which focuses on commercial, industrial and institutional development projects.

Peter Farrell

VCU Board of Visitors Representative

Peter Farrell is a member of the Board of Visitors for Virginia Commonwealth University. He is managing partner of Tuckahoe Holdings and previously served in the Virginia House of Delegates.

Robert L. Findling, M.D., M.B.A.

VCU Health System Authority Board Representative

Robert Findling, M.D., M.B.A., is the chair of the VCU School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry as well as a C. Kenneth and Dianne Wright Distinguished Chair in Clinical & Translational Research. Dr. Findling’s research endeavors have focused on pediatric psychopharmacology and serious psychiatric disorders in the young.

Jennifer F. Flinchum

Jennifer provides tax compliance and strategic consulting for privately held businesses and their owners, and is the lead partner of Keiter’s Family, Executive, and Entrepreneur Advisory Services Team.

Louis Formica, D.D.S.

MCV Alumni Representative

Dr. Louis Formica is an assistant professor and general practice group director at the VCU School of Dentistry.

Moses Foster Jr.

Moses Foster Jr. is the founder, president, and CEO of the advertising and marketing firm West Cary Group.

Steve Gaidos

Steve is the general manager for the Virginia Market of Terazo, a Richmond-founded software engineering firm. 

Sheryl Garland

Sheryl Garland joined the VCU Health System in 1988 after completing an administrative residency at MCV Hospitals.

Stephen Goddard

Stephen is the founder of The London Company and heads the firm’s investment and management teams. He has more than 30 years of investment experience, beginning his career as an analyst for Scott & Stringfellow.

Elizabeth Hopkins

Elizabeth is an executive director and banker with J.P. Morgan Private Bank and works closely with multi-generational families, private business owners, executives and entrepreneurs.

Basil Leonard Hurst III

Beau is a partner and head of business development and investor relations at Stelliam Investment Management in New York.

Susan G. Kornstein, M.D.

Corporate Secretary

Susan is a professor of psychiatry and obstetrics & gynecology at VCU School of Medicine, executive director of the VCU Institute for Women’s Health, and director of clinical research for the VCU department of psychiatry.

Ghulam D. Qureshi, M.D.

A 1964 graduate of King Edward Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan, Ghulam came to Richmond in 1965 to complete an internship at Johnston-Willis Hospital and a residency in internal medicine at the Medical College of Virginia.

Kee Tilghman Rabb

Kee is a partner at Apogem Capital focusing on buyout, growth equity and turnaround manager relationships in North America.

W. Taylor Reveley III

Taylor was the 27th president of William & Mary and previously served as dean of its law school.

Michele Romano, M.D.

Michele is a retired family practice physician who, before deciding to pursue her medical degree, served as an ICU nurse and opened the first community hospital ICU in Fairbanks, Alaska, in 1969, serving as its head nurse.

Liza Jarvis Scott

Liza is the director of asset management at Dominion Energy where she manages the pension fund and other trust assets. Before Dominion, Liza spent 10 years as a director at Spider Management Company in Richmond, Virginia.

Louise Woltz Smith

Louise is a managing director at Apogem Capital focusing on buyout, growth equity and turnaround manager relationships in North America.

Tracy Kemp Stallings

Tracy joined the MCV Foundation board in summer 2016, and also serves on the VCU Foundation board.

James H. Starkey III

Jim is the president of Starkey Consulting, which advises government and business clients on international, agricultural, trade and development issues.

Judith Forehand Starkey

Judi, who attended Marymount and George Mason University, was before her retirement a licensed social worker, president/CEO of a large business association and an executive with a national healthcare company.

Richard P. Wenzel, M.D., M.Sc.

Richard is one of the leading infectious diseases epidemiologists in the world, having established his reputation in the field of infection control in hospitals.

Spencer Williamson

Spencer is President and CEO and a member of the board of directors at kaléo, a pharmaceutical company headquartered in Richmond.

Rachel Yost

Rachel is a managing partner at SIR, a strategic management consulting firm in Richmond, where she leads quantitative market research and helps clients uncover insights to help change their futures.

Interim Senior Vice President, VCU Health Sciences and Interim CEO, VCU Health System

Marlon F. Levy, M.D., is the interim senior vice president for health sciences at VCU and the Interim CEO of the VCU Health System. In addition to these roles, Dr. Levy is chair of the Division of Transplant Surgery at VCU Health and director of the VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center.
