Tyler joined the foundation in July 2021 focusing on videography and photography. His work at the foundation has been nominated for a regional Emmy and recognized nationally as a Webby Honoree.

Prior to this role, he specialized in documentary filmmaking, having helped mission-driven organizations such as the Smithsonian Institution and the American Association for the Advancement of Science to tell important stories. His work has been featured on PBS, Hulu, The Atlantic and The New Yorker.

An accomplished visual storyteller, Tyler has taught as an adjunct instructor in filmmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University and Old Dominion University. In the community, he volunteers as sound mixer for Secretly Y’all, a nonprofit storytelling event group. He also co-founded RVA Documentary as a social and professional forum for documentary storytellers.

Tyler earned his M.F.A. in documentary film and video from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree in American studies from William & Mary.
