Shirley Gibson, D.N.P., Recognized for Building VCU Health With a Blueprint Forged From Experience
For more than five decades, Shirley Gibson, D.N.P., has devoted her career to strengthening healthcare – and for the past 21 years, she’s poured that experience into shaping what VCU Health is and what it’s becoming.
Across those years, Dr. Gibson, has seen healthcare from every possible angle: bedside nurse, clinical leader, executive strategist and now vice president of real estate for the VCU Health System.
That span of service gives her a depth of knowledge rivaled by very few, and it makes her selection as the MCV Foundation’s 2026 Jerome F. Strauss III Award recipient feel not only fitting, but inevitable. The award honors a VCU administrator, faculty or staff member who has demonstrated extraordinary service and stewardship to MCV Campus alumni, donors or other members of the community.
She is truly a role model for current and future healthcare professionals. She has created this set of standards around excellence, and that has followed her throughout her entire career.

Dr. Gibson’s fingerprints can be seen in every corner of the place, from its people to its projects to its culture, in ways that are unmistakable and deeply felt. Those who have worked alongside her describe a sunny leader propelled by an internal engine that never seems to cool.
“Boundless energy, incredible curiosity, enormous enthusiasm,” said Marlon Levy, M.D., senior vice president of VCU Health Sciences and chief executive officer of VCU Health.
Dr. Levy has watched her bring that energy to every challenge, no matter how complex or high‑stakes, and he values it because it sparks the same sense of possibility in the people around her. “She is eternally optimistic about the projects that we're trying to do and the reasons that we're trying to do them.”
That kind of presence, it seems, comes from a deeper internal compass. “I think Dr. Gibson comes from a place of deep conviction, a deep sense of doing the right thing, of service to others,” Dr. Levy said.
One of Dr. Gibson’s defining constants has been her unshakeable focus on people: patients, families and the teams who care for them. Longtime colleagues have seen that thread run through every role she’s held.
“I never knew her when she was at the bedside, I didn't have the privilege there,” said Ralph “Ron” Clark, M.D., associate professor in the VCU School of Medicine. “But I have seen her in innumerable other roles, and it's always with the patient, the family first.”
Even as her responsibilities expanded, that instinct never shifted. “That's her starting point. And her ending point,” Dr. Clark said.
That steadiness has made her a grounding force inside a complex health system, pulling the organization back to its purpose when the work gets hard or the way forward isn’t clear.
“She's had so many positive influences on us. Probably the most important is always keeping us centered on what's important, and that's the quality of the service that we're providing to our patients,” Dr. Clark said.
Dr. Gibson’s example has shaped generations of colleagues, setting a standard that has become part of the institution’s DNA. Her influence reaches beyond individual relationships, helping define what excellence looks like at VCU Health.
“She is truly a role model for current and future healthcare professionals,” said Sheryl Garland, M.H.A., chief of health impact for VCU Health System. “She has created this set of standards around excellence, and that has followed her throughout her entire career.”
And yet admiration for Dr. Gibson isn’t only about her warmth or her example. It’s also about her strength. Whether navigating challenges, guiding major projects or holding teams steady through change, the respect for her resolve runs deep.
“She's a steely administrator. She's wonderful,” Garland said.
A career of such depth is uncommon. A career whose influence becomes part of an institution’s fabric is extraordinary. At VCU Health, Dr. Gibson’s leadership has helped shape a foundation the organization continues to build upon – and a blueprint still guiding its future.
