The Work of Dr. David W. Hess

Professorship benefits research for long-term survivors of cancer

David HessThe Rosa Schwarz Cifu Professorship in Cancer Rehabilitation, one of the first professorships created during the Campaign for VCU, is held by David W. Hess, Ph.D., ABPP, associate professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Hess is a rehabilitation psychologist who has more than 18 years of experience working with neurological disabilities and other chronic conditions. Recently, both his clinical and research interests have addressed the concerns of long-term survivors of cancer. The Cifu Professorship provided support for Hess’ participation as a collaborator in the development of the Cancer Survivorship Clinic located at the Massey Cancer Center.

The professorship was established by David X. Cifu, M.D., chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and his two brothers in honor of their late mother, Rosa Schwarz Cifu, who was an oncology nurse for more than 30 years.
