Patients from Richmond and beyond who need cardiovascular and oncology care gained an important ally in their treatment this summer.

Each year, our board of trustees honors people who have made significant contributions to the world-class patient care, research and education that VCU Health delivers on the MCV Campus and beyond.

The weather and the views were perfect at Upper Shirley Vineyards on May 9 as we honored some of the most important partners that the MCV Campus at VCU Health has in saving lives, advancing research and improving education. We couldn’t have been happier to recognize our MCV Society members for their vital support of the campus.

Beginning this May, the City of Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services will be the newest partner in treating sickle cell disease alongside VCU Health and Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU.

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, so we’re taking the opportunity to highlight recent research on the MCV Campus examining human papillomavirus (HPV), which is contributing to a rise in the frequency of oropharyngeal cancer (cancer located in the base of the tongue or tonsillar region).

Seth Spencer, having completed his first year as a student at VCU School of Medicine, is staying on the MCV Campus this summer to begin his fight to ensure young people in the future won’t have to face what he did.

Making sure medications get to the right place in the body for optimal treatment is an ongoing concern in healthcare. In aerosol treatments intended for the lungs, 60-90 percent of the medication is wasted and never reaches its target in adults.

2017 has been an amazing year on the MCV Campus at VCU Health. As we continued to support the region’s only comprehensive academic health center by inspiring philanthropic contributions and sharing the stories of life-saving global impact, the campus’s progress toward reaching goals for improving patient care, research and education has been substantial.

A year of celebration culminated on Dec. 2 as the VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center commemorated 60 years of milestones and second chances.

Those who support the MCV Campus at VCU Health do so because they believe in the VCU Health mission, which is to preserve and restore health for all people, to seek the cause and cure of diseases through innovative research, and to educate those who serve humanity.
